What are the disadvantages of homeschooling? Practical matters, such as cost, are a problem… Not every family is able to live on one salary. It also requires much time to offer one child homeschooling. Not every parent is motivated every day to be devoted entirely to their child.
And is every parent able to teach all children? A few are optimistic, for example Dr. H. Block, University of Amsterdam, who believes that every parent can. His view is not universally shared. Parents have restrictions on the level of disclosure and even though they rely on information sources like books and the Internet, they must be able to explain the material.
Another disadvantage of parents as teachers is that they are less objective about the performance of their children. And not all parents have their children’s best interests in mind… Every child that is the victim of his own parents is one too many.
Besides social and practical concerns are also moral and legal objections. Children must be able to form their own opinions and their parents may not deny this opportunity. This is not just a pedagogical ideal: it is a fundamental right of the child under the international child of the UN Convention. A risk of homeschooling is that parents protect their children from ideologies that parents find embarrassing.
There are many concerns about socialization in home education – but these concerns are unfounded. Children can make and maintain friendships outside of a school setting. Possibly even better friendships, because the social setting in school isn’t always very positive.
