Home school parents are always looking for new and exiting ways to stimulate learning. Using different types of technology and homeschool software is a great way to keep things interesting and teach kids important skills that will serve them well later in life.
If you have never heard of geocaching it is just such a game. Combining technology, the outdoors, and adventure, geocaching is a great way for families to bond and for kids of all different age levels to have a great time.
Geocaching is a simple scavenger hunt game that uses a hand held GPS to locate hidden caches. You can find coordinates to different geocaches in your area by visiting various geocaching web sites. You then hunt down the geocache and leave a note in the log book. Often times the caches will have trinkets that you can trade out or some other type of clue as to the location of another treasure. This is simply a modern day treasure hunt that is great fun for all ages.
Geocaches are hidden in all sorts of area. There are urban caches as well as very remote caches. There are most likely a couple within a couple of miles of where you live right now.
Geocaching can be integrated into a number of different lessons. You can stress the navigation aspects of the hunt, you can teach appreciation for the environment and the wilderness, you can go camping, work on geology, forestry or anything else involving the outdoors. The possibilities are endless.
There are different levels of geocaching, so if you are just starting out make sure that you are not choosing something that is hidden in a very difficult location. Some are easy to find and others are hidden with cruel pride. Either way, after you find the cache it is customary to put it back into the hiding spot and log your find on the internet. But of course don’t give away the location.
This is a great way to not only get kids interested in the outdoor and other aspects of learning but also to get the outdoors and active. Kids have most likely been exposed to similar technology in our vehicles and on our phones but they are often not allowed to have access to the technology themselves.
This is an excellent way to use technology to bring the world to life and bring the classroom into the real world. Using this and other forms of homeschool software you have the ability to give your children an excellent head start.
